SUC Institute for Sustainable Cities and Communities is an non-profit organization for the global promotion and implementation of the SUC Guidelines, co-launched by the Main Author of the UNEP SUC Guidelines, relevant international editorial board members and experts, etc. It was registered and established in Queensland in January 2019, approved by the Australian Government under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981. Prof. Deo Prasad, a member of both Australian Academy of Sciences and Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering & Professor of Sciences at the University of New South Wales, acts as the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the SUC Institute.
SUC Institute aims to promote the implementation of the SUC Guidelines across the world, share tools, methodologies, skills and knowledge, as well as implement pilots and evaluation certification, release case reports; revise and upgrade the SUC Guidelines when necessary, through cooperation with relevant UN agencies, international organizations, research institutions and local authorities, so as to promote the implementation of the SDG11 - United Nations Goal on Sustainable Cities and Communities at the local level around the globe.
The China SUC Institute is an open and international social think tank established under the proposal of the National “Two Sessions” in March 2019 and supported with an official letter issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD). It is a national social organization filed and registered by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of China, with the full name of the Sustainable Urban and Community Development Institution of China International Association for Promotion of Science and Technology.The China SUC Institute was first registered in Hong Kong, China in 2016, with Headquarter registered in Beijing in 2019.
The China SUC Institute is launched jointly by the Chinese co-development organizations of SUC Guidelines as well as domestic and foreign experts and scientists, etc. It aims to provide high-level policy advice, scientific consultation and standardization services for promotion& application of SUC Guidelines and implementation of related human settlements goals of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in China and along the Belt and Road countries. The cutting-edge technology research and synergetic science-tech innovation in the sector of sustainable cities and communities at global level will be conducted.
The SUC (Beijing) Programme Management Center Co., Ltd (hereinafter referred to as the “SUC PMC”) is a full-service consulting firm dedicated to strategic planning of sustainable urban and community development as well as the pilot building and management& operation in China. It focuses on integrating superior resources led by the "international standards on sustainable development of human settlements" and providing consulting and practical solutions for standardization, branding, international cooperation and pilot building on sustainable development of cities and communities in China. As a member of “SAC/TC567 National Standardization Technical Committee for Sustainable Urban Development” of the Standardization Administration of China, the SUC PMC is the core compiler and initiator of the GB “Guidelines for Building Ecological Communities”, the GB “Management System Requirements& Application Guidelines for Sustainable Urban and Community Development", the “Evaluation Criteria of Rural Future Communities in China” and the “United Nations Guidelines for Sustainable Cities and Communities”. It is also the brand initiator and standard compiler of the “International Future Community” and “Future Ekistics-tech City” for cities and villages.
Since established in 2010, the SUC PMC has been focusing on two major sectors of "cities" and "communities", so as to provide consulting services on international standards on sustainable development and preparation of development strategic planning for more than 10 cities, including Hangzhou, Zhanjiang, Quzhou, Yueyang, Fuzhou, Yan'an, Xinyang, Yantian in Shenzhen, Tianxin in Changsha and Changxing County in Zhejiang, etc. It has provided consulting services on international livability standards and promotional service at global level for approx. 20 cities including Nanjing, Wuxi, Kunming, Jinan, Jincheng, Suining, Nanning, Dongcheng District and Xicheng District in Beijing, Nansha District in Guangzhou, Qihe County in Shandong and Jiangshan City in Zhejiang, as well as for nearly 30 listed companies and enterprises in community construction, including Vanke, China Communications Construction Company, Sino-Ocean, China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection, Hopson, Country Garden, San-Sum, Sun Hung Kai, Wanfeng International, Septwolves and Heilan, so as to create a benchmark for sustainable development in China and provide massive Chinese examples on sustainable development of cities and communities for other countries.
Established in January 2018, the Beijing SUC Institute is a new scientific research institution initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and launched by the SUC Programme Management Center, with the full name of Beijing Future Ekistics Technology Institute. The Institute aims to provide technical support for the preparation and pilot application of the UN SUC Guidelines in China by collaborating with superior resources and technical strengths from all sectors, as well as to develop research and promotional work focusing on Ekistics-tech and industrialization.
The Beijing SUC Institute is one of the organizations co-developing the “United Nations Guidelines for Sustainable Cities and Communities (SUC Guidelines)”, at the same time undertaking the functions of the China Center for Spectra EU Centre of Excellence and the China Center for Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Low Carbon Living Australia.
